Purpose:

Each transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) contains:
1.5mg scopolamine and releases in-vivo 1.0mg per 72 hours
General:
Scopoderm TTS contains scopolamine, also known as hyoscine, which is considered the most effective medicine for the prevention of motion sickness. Scopoderm TTS is a transdermal therapeutic system with a rate-controlling membrane to ensure it is released gradually over 3 days. This prevents motion sickness without the side effects of oral preparations
The patch is simply applied behind the ear and can be forgotten for 3 days
The sense organ of balance is the vestibular apparatus, located in the inner ear. These circular, fluid-filled structures detect movement in three planes. Over-stimulation of the vestibular apparatus is the primary cause of motion sickness but visual stimulation (eg.Moving horizon) or other sensory input such as car fumes can potentiate the effect
The prevention of motion sickness is preferable to attempting to treat it once it
occurs. There are a number of simple measures which may help including: positioning in the boat or plane, avoiding reading, watching a fixed visual reference point, reducing head movement, undertaking simple diversionary tasks, plenty of fresh air, avoiding alcohol and excessive food
Scopoderm TTS contains scopolamine; one of the most effective agents for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness. The transdermal system provides a constant low concentration for 3 days. Scopoderm TTS works by inhibiting cholinergic impulses from the vestibular apparatus of the inner ear to the vomiting center in the brain
Warning:
Not recommended for children under 10 years
The following patients should consult their Doctor before using Scopoderm TTS:
- patients suffering from pyloric stenosis or from difficulty in passing water owing to an impeded flow of urine,
- patients with intestinal obstruction,
- elderly patients,
- patients with metabolic disorders or with impaired hepatic or renal function
Also patients whose case history indicates that there might be raised intra-ocular pressure (pressure pain, blurred vision, glaucomatous halo) should speak to their Doctor before using Scopoderm TTS. In rare cases confused states or visual hallucinations may occur, in which case the patch should be removed. In isolated cases an increase in seizure frequency in epileptic patients has been reported. Idiosyncratic reactions may occur with ordinary therapeutic doses of scopolamine
Scopoderm TTS should be used during pregnancy only if the anticipated benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. Many medicines are passed to breast milk and nursing mothers should use caution. Scopoderm TTS occasionally causes drowsiness and may not be suitable for patients who drive or operate machinery
Potential adverse effects may include: dry moth, blurring of vision or irritation of the
eyelids, drowsiness, dizziness, local irritation of the skin, retention of urine
Scopolamines should be used with caution in patients taking medicines (including alcohol) which act on the central nervous system, particularly patients using agents which display anticholinergic activity eg. Belladonna alkaloids, antihistamines, tricyclic
antidepressants (such as amitriptyline and imipramine), amantadine, quinidine.
Not to be used by patients with a history of glaucoma, irregular heartbeat or epilepsy.
Seek medical advice immediately if you develop a painful red eye
Dosage:
Scopoderm TTS ‘patch’ should be applied about 5-6 hours before embarking on a journey, to a dry hairless area of skin behind the ear. One patch is sufficient for 72 hours but may be removed earlier if no longer required. Hands should be washed after applying the patch. Do not cut the patch
