Canesten vaginal cream is an anti-fungal agent used to treat candidal infections of the vagina (commonly referred to as thrush)
Candida is an overgrowth of yeast fungus resulting in an imbalance of the natural
micro-organisms present in the vagina. In this condition the Candida organism predominates causing the symptoms of discomfort and discharge.
Diabetes, obesity, illness and fatigue can increase susceptibility to the condition.
Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, at certain times of the menstrual cycle, or due to the oral contraceptive pill, can also increase susceptibility. The balance of the vaginal environment can be altered by the prolonged use of certain medications, such as antibiotics and steroids; by soaking in baths using oils, salt, or harsh soaps; by wearing too tight or synthetic clothing.
Advice before using Canesten vaginal cream:
- Seek medical advice if this is your first infection
- Seek medical advice if you are under 18 years of age
- See a doctor if you have had 3 or more infections in the last 6 months
- See a doctor if you are pregnant (or think you may be)
- See a doctor if you are a diabetic
- During pregnancy the treatment should be carried out with Canesten vaginal tablets, since these can be inserted without using an applicator
Warnings:
Keep out of reach of children. Do not use this medication if you have a known
hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any other ingredients.
If a local reaction or intolerance develops, refer to your pharmacist for advice
If there is a possibility you are pregnant, inform your doctor before using this
medication. Canesten vaginal cream should only be used if your doctor considers it
essential for your well being, especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy.
Canesten Vaginal Cream may reduce the effectiveness and safety of latex products, such as condoms and diaphragms. This effect is temporary and occurs only during treatment
Store below 25°C
Dosage:
Fully fill one disposable applicator with Canesten cream. Insert cream once daily as
gently and deeply as possible into the vagina at bedtime for 6 consecutive days. Consult a doctor if symptoms do not start to clear within 4 days after commencement of treatment.
